Cancel a photo cleaner subscription on iPhone

Open Settings, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, choose the app and tap Cancel Subscription; for a trial, Apple says to do it at least 24 hours before the trial ends. Already charged? Request a refund at reportaproblem.apple.com, though Apple reviews each request and approval isn't guaranteed.

Cancel it in Settings

A subscription you bought through an app from the App Store is handled by Apple, so you cancel it with Apple, not inside the app. On your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings and tap your name.
  2. Tap Subscriptions.
  3. Tap the cleaner app's subscription.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription. You might need to scroll down to find the button.

If there's no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, Apple says the subscription is already canceled. You can also cancel on the web at account.apple.com, signed in with the same Apple Account.

Still in a trial? Cancel at least 24 hours before it ends

Apple's rule is short: if you signed up for a trial subscription and don't want to renew it, cancel it at least 24 hours before the trial ends.

That window is where many people get caught. Complaints about cleaner apps often describe a trial that turned into a paid plan, sometimes billed weekly, before the person got round to canceling. If you're only trying an app, put a reminder in your calendar a couple of days before the trial ends, or cancel as soon as you've decided it isn't for you.

Can't find the subscription?

If it isn't in the list, it's probably on a different account. Apple's steps:

  1. Search your email for "receipt from Apple" or "invoice from Apple".
  2. On the receipt, check which Apple Account was used.
  3. If it's another Apple Account of yours, sign in with that account and cancel there. If it's a family member's account, they have to cancel it: Apple says you can't cancel a family member's subscription.
  4. If there's no receipt from Apple at all, you might have bought the subscription from another company. Check your bank or card statement to see who bills you, and contact that company.

To see everything you've bought, open the App Store, tap your photo or initials, tap Apps & Purchase History, then tap Purchase History. If you know the amount but not the app, search for the amount. The same list is at reportaproblem.apple.com.

Already charged? Ask Apple for a refund

Some App Store purchases might be eligible for a refund. Apple's steps:

  1. Sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com.
  2. Tap "I'd like to", then choose "Request a refund".
  3. Choose the reason, then choose Next.
  4. Choose the subscription, then choose Submit.

What to expect, according to Apple:

StageWhat Apple says
DecisionAllow 24 to 48 hours for an update; check Check Status of Claims at reportaproblem.apple.com
Card, Apple Pay and most other methodsUp to 30 days for the refund to show on your statement
Apple Account balanceUp to 48 hours
Mobile phone billing30 to 60 days
AfterwardsYou may lose access to refunded items

Apple also notes that refund eligibility varies by country or region, and that once you've submitted a request, contacting Apple by phone or chat won't speed it up. In places with consumer protection laws, you keep the rights those laws give you.

A parent's or child's iPhone

Many reports of unexpected cleaner-app charges involve someone else's phone: a parent who tapped through a trial, or a child.

  • Cancel on their account. Apple says you can't cancel a family member's subscription, so sit down with them and cancel it in Settings on their iPhone.
  • Refunds for family purchases. If you're the Family Sharing organizer and the charge went to your shared payment method, you can still request the refund at reportaproblem.apple.com: tap the Apple Account button, then choose All.
  • Children: Ask to Buy. With Family Sharing and a Child Account, Ask to Buy means your child has to ask before downloading an app or making an in-app purchase. On your own iPhone: Settings › Family › your child's name › Apps & Websites › Restrictions › Ask to Buy, then turn on Require Purchase Approval. Depending on the country or region, it's on by default and can't be turned off for children under 18.
  • Adults: ask for a password every time. Apple suggests this if family members have access to your device. Go to Settings › your name › Media & Purchases › Password Settings and choose Always Require. If you don't see Password Settings, Face ID or Touch ID is already turned on for purchases.
