iCloud full vs iPhone full: clean or buy more?
First check which one is full: iCloud storage and iPhone storage are separate, so buying iCloud+ adds space in the cloud, not on your iPhone. A full iCloud is fixed by deleting or upgrading; a full iPhone is fixed on the iPhone, where iCloud helps only through Optimize iPhone Storage.
Two kinds of storage, two different fixes
Apple describes them separately. iCloud storage keeps your photos, files and other data in the cloud, up to date on every device signed in with the same Apple Account. Device storage is the storage on the iPhone itself, and Apple says your device comes with a set amount. An iCloud+ plan makes the first one bigger. Nothing you buy makes the second one bigger.
| iCloud storage | iPhone storage | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Space tied to your Apple Account, with 5 GB free | The capacity your iPhone came with |
| Where to check | Settings › your name › iCloud | Settings › General › iPhone Storage |
| When it's full | Apple says iCloud Backup stops, new photos don't upload to iCloud Photos, and iCloud Drive stops staying up to date | You may see a Storage Almost Full alert |
| Can you buy more? | Yes, with iCloud+ | No |
Which one is full?
Look at both numbers before you decide anything:
- iCloud: open Settings, tap your name, then tap iCloud. Tap Storage (or Manage Storage) to see what's using it.
- iPhone: open Settings, tap General, then tap iPhone Storage. You'll see recommendations and a list of apps with the space each one uses; photos and videos in the Photos app appear under Photos.
Apple's pages also name the warnings differently: iCloud Storage Almost Full for iCloud, Storage Almost Full for the device. If you're not sure which warning you saw, the two numbers above settle it.
If iCloud is full
When iCloud runs out, Apple says new photos and videos stop uploading to iCloud Photos, and the Photos app may show that syncing has paused because you exceeded your storage limit. You have two fair choices.
Clean up. Apple's suggestions for making space in iCloud include:
- Delete photos and videos you don't need. With iCloud Photos on, deleting on one device deletes on every device signed in with the same Apple Account, so back up anything you still want first. Items in Recently Deleted don't count towards your iCloud storage.
- Recommended for You. On iOS 17 or later, go to Settings › your name › iCloud › Recommended for You. It points to photos, large files and old backups you might not need.
- Old backups. Turning off iCloud Backup for apps you don't use, or deleting backups of old devices, makes iCloud Backup smaller.
- Your Personal Library. If you're in an iCloud Shared Photo Library, its photos count only towards the creator's storage, so view your Personal Library to find what counts towards yours.
Buy more. In iOS 27, open Settings, tap your name, tap iCloud, then tap Manage Plan under iCloud+ Features; if you don't have iCloud+ yet, tap iCloud › Storage › Get More Storage. In iOS 18.4 to iOS 26, upgrade through your name › Subscriptions › iCloud+ › See All Plans, or buy a first plan through iCloud › Upgrade to iCloud+. Then choose a plan and follow the onscreen steps.
Which is better is your call, not Apple's. A rough way to decide:
| Clean up first if… | Buying more is simpler if… |
|---|---|
| Much of the space is screenshots, duplicates, old videos or backups you don't need | Your library is mostly photos you want to keep |
| You went over the limit only recently | It's been full for a while and keeps filling up again |
| You have time to review before deleting | Syncing has stopped and you need it working now |
If your iPhone is full
More iCloud storage doesn't change this number directly. These do:
- Recently Deleted. Deleted photos stay there for 30 days before they're permanently deleted. If you're sure, you can delete them yourself: Photos › Collections › Recently Deleted (under Utilities) › View Album › Select › More › Delete or Delete All, then Delete from All Devices. After that they can't be recovered. How Recently Deleted affects storage
- Optimize iPhone Storage. This is where iCloud does help the iPhone: your iPhone keeps space-saving copies and iCloud holds the originals. Turn it on in Settings › your name › iCloud › Photos (in iOS 27, tap iPhone Storage first). It relies on iCloud having room for your library: Apple says to make sure you have enough iCloud space for your entire collection before you turn on iCloud Photos. That's why someone whose iPhone and iCloud are both full may end up buying iCloud storage for the iPhone's sake.
- iPhone Storage recommendations. In Settings › General › iPhone Storage, tap Show All, then tap Enable on a recommendation or open it to review what you can delete.
- Videos and apps. For a Storage Almost Full alert, Apple suggests checking those recommendations or removing content such as videos and apps. Offloading an app frees the storage it uses but keeps its documents and data.
- A computer. Apple suggests transferring photos and videos you don't want to store in iCloud to your computer. With iCloud Photos on, read Delete iPhone photos but keep them in iCloud? before you delete anything afterwards.
Where SnapTidy fits
In short
- iCloud storage and iPhone storage are separate; iCloud+ doesn't add iPhone space.
- Check both: Settings › your name › iCloud, and Settings › General › iPhone Storage.
- iCloud full: delete what you don't need, carefully, because over the limit deletions are immediate; or buy iCloud+.
- iPhone full: Recently Deleted, Optimize iPhone Storage, the storage recommendations, then videos and apps.
