Budget app keeps losing your bank connection?

Use the reconnect option inside the app first, then sign in to your bank directly. A changed password, an out-of-date phone number for security codes, a sharing setting at the bank or an outage is the usual cause. While the link is down, log purchases by hand for a week so your budget stays current.

Why bank connections break

A linked budget usually depends on three parties: the app, a connection service that talks to banks (often called an aggregator), and your bank. A change at any of them can break the link, and you’re not alone if it keeps happening. In 1,737 one- to three-star budgeting-app reviews we read and coded in October 2026, failing bank, card, wallet or e-invoice connections were the largest single complaint, at 21%. They ranked in the top two in every market we looked at except mainland China, where the apps we checked don’t link banks at all.

Plaid, one of these connection services, lists the most common causes on its help page for consumers:

CauseWhat it suggests trying
Your login changedRe-enter it carefully, check that a password manager isn’t filling in the wrong details, and confirm the login on your bank’s website
Your bank needs you to actOn the bank’s website, not its mobile app, look for a third-party sharing setting under privacy or security. For a new account, activate cards, set up online banking and accept any new terms
Your phone number for security codes is out of dateUpdate it with your bank, and add a backup contact method if you can
A one-time code doesn’t arriveCheck with your bank that your phone number or email is correct
The bank or the connection service has an outageTry again later; check your bank’s website for known problems
The bank isn’t supported, or changed somethingAsk the app whether there’s another way to connect

Your app may use a different service, but the same three-way setup applies.

Fix it in this order

This is general advice. Your app’s own help pages come first, because they know which connection service and options they use.

  1. Use the app’s reconnect option. Look for a warning on the account, or a button to update or reconnect it, and follow the steps. Remove and re-add the account only if the app’s help suggests it, and check first whether removing it deletes the history it imported.
  2. Sign in to your bank directly, on its website. Confirm the password works, and deal with any new terms or messages waiting for you.
  3. Check the bank’s privacy or security settings for third-party sharing or connected apps, and make sure access for this app is allowed.
  4. Update the phone number or email your bank sends security codes to.
  5. Wait, then retry. If the bank or the service is down, retrying every few minutes won’t help. Try again later in the day.
  6. Contact the app’s support with your bank’s name and the exact error message.

Keep budgeting while sync is down

A broken connection doesn’t have to cost you a month of budgeting. For one week, log by hand:

  1. Note the date the sync stopped. That’s where you’ll check for gaps later.
  2. Log only day-to-day spending. Rent and other fixed bills are already known; you don’t need to type them.
  3. Log right after you pay. The amount and what it was for, in one line.
  4. Once a day, scroll your bank or card app and add anything you missed.
  5. When the connection comes back, look for duplicates. If the app imports purchases you already logged by hand, delete one copy.

A week of this keeps your numbers current. It also tells you whether manual logging is something you could live with.

If it keeps breaking

If you’re reconnecting every few weeks, weigh your options:

  • Link fewer accounts, perhaps only the card you use daily, and log the rest by hand.
  • Ask the app or your bank whether there’s another way to connect.
  • Use a budget that never links a bank. Here is the trade-off:

The guide to budgeting without bank linking goes deeper into both sides.

Where My Money fits

In short

  • Reconnect inside the app first, then sign in to your bank’s website and check your login, any new terms and its sharing settings.
  • Outages pass; retry later rather than over and over.
  • Log by hand while sync is down, and watch for duplicates when it comes back.
  • If the link keeps breaking, a budget that never links a bank removes the problem, at the cost of logging every entry.
