How to log expenses on iPhone with Back Tap: double-tap after you pay

Back Tap is an iPhone accessibility setting that runs an action when you double- or triple-tap the back of the phone, and that action can be a shortcut. Pair it with My Money’s screenshot shortcut and the payment screen you’re looking at becomes a draft entry to check and save. Setup takes a few minutes, once.

Why log right after paying

Most missed entries start as “I’ll add it later.” The best moment to log is the second after you pay: the amount, the merchant and the time are on the screen in front of you, and you still remember what it was for. Back Tap turns that moment into a double-tap: you don’t have to find the app, pick a category or type a number.

Step 1: Add the shortcut from My Money

  1. Open My Money and go to Settings › Screenshot shortcut. The page is headed “Two taps. One entry.”
  2. Tap Add the shortcut and follow the prompts to add it to the Shortcuts app. It’s named My Money Screenshot Entry.
  3. Come back to My Money for the next step.

Step 2: Assign it to Back Tap

These are Apple’s steps for running a shortcut with Back Tap:

  1. Open the Settings app and go to Accessibility › Touch.
  2. Scroll down and select Back Tap. (My Money’s setup screen reminds you: Back Tap is at the very bottom of Touch.)
  3. Select Double Tap. Triple Tap works too, if you prefer.
  4. Scroll down to the Shortcuts area and choose My Money Screenshot Entry.
  5. Tap Back Tap to apply the setting.

Step 3: Try it

Back in My Money’s Screenshot shortcut page, tap Try it. It previews an example of what the shortcut does; nothing is logged.

Using it after you pay

  1. Pay as usual, then stay on the payment confirmation, the bill or the receipt.
  2. Double-tap the back of your iPhone.
  3. My Money opens and shows a draft read from the screenshot.
  4. Check the draft, fix anything that’s wrong, and save. Nothing is logged until you do.

The home screen’s “Left today” updates as soon as you save, so you see what that purchase means for the rest of today.

Prefer Control Center?

On iOS 18 or later you can run the same shortcut from Control Center instead of, or as well as, Back Tap. In My Money’s setup page this option is labelled Use Control Center instead. Apple’s steps:

  1. Open Control Center by swiping down from the top right, or swiping up from the bottom, depending on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the Add button at the top left, then tap Add a Control at the bottom.
  3. Tap Shortcut, tap Choose, then select My Money Screenshot Entry.

Other quick ways to log

Back Tap suits payments you can see on screen. For everything else:

  • Type a line. “lunch 12” fills in the amount and category; it understands “yesterday” too.
  • Pick screenshots later. On the home screen, the screenshot button lets you choose up to five payment screens, bills or receipts at once, or take a photo of a paper receipt.
  • Voice Log. Run it from Siri, Shortcuts or the Action Button: My Money opens a full-screen recorder, and you check the draft before saving. Apple’s Action Button steps: on supported models (iPhone 15 Pro or later), go to Settings › Action Button, swipe to Shortcut, tap Choose a Shortcut and select Voice Log.
  • Quick Log. Run from Shortcuts or Siri with a line of text, it saves without opening the app and replies with what’s left today. There’s no review step, so check it later.

What gets read, and where

The screenshot is read on your iPhone with Apple Vision, and the image isn’t uploaded. Online AI is optional and off by default; if you turn it on and allow its Screenshot entry permission, the recognised text (which can include the merchant, amount and time), the date, time zone and currency are sent for parsing. The image itself never is.

If it doesn’t work

  • Nothing happens when you double-tap. Go back to Settings › Accessibility › Touch › Back Tap › Double Tap and check that the shortcut is selected in the Shortcuts area.
  • It triggers by accident. Assign the shortcut to Triple Tap instead.
  • A line was read wrongly. Edit the draft or untick it; nothing is saved until you tap Save.
  • You use My Money in another language. The setup is the same; only the names in iOS Settings and Shortcuts follow your system language.

  • After paying, stay on the payment screen, double-tap, check the draft and save.
  • On iOS 18 or later you can add the same shortcut to Control Center.
