Deleted photos still in your camera roll?

Usually they were never deleted from your photo library: the app only listed them, or the deletion wasn't confirmed. If they were deleted, they're in Recently Deleted, still syncing to other devices, or somewhere a normal delete doesn't reach, like a shared album or photos synced from a computer.

First check: did the delete actually happen?

A photo that has really been deleted leaves your Library and, in most cases, waits in Recently Deleted for 30 days. So if it's still in your Library, the deletion never reached your photo library, and Recently Deleted is the quickest way to check.

Open Photos, tap Collections, swipe up and tap Recently Deleted under Utilities, then tap View Album and unlock it with Face ID or Touch ID. Apple says deleted photos and videos go there for 30 days, so this one album tells you where to look next:

Sorting isn't deleting

Many people who report this had sorted photos inside an app without the deletion ever reaching the photo library. Some apps work in two stages: you pick photos first, and the app deletes them later, after you open a review screen and confirm. If you left before that last step, or dismissed a confirmation, nothing changed in Photos.

Go back to the app and look for its own review list or trash, and finish the deletion there. Or delete the photos in Photos yourself: tap Select, tap the photos (or slide your finger across several), tap the Trash button and confirm.

They're in Recently Deleted: that's normal

Apple says deleted photos stay in Recently Deleted for 30 days and are permanently deleted after that. Until then you can recover them, which is the point.

If you want them gone now and you're sure: in Recently Deleted, tap Select, choose the photos, tap the More button, then Delete or Delete All, and confirm with Delete from All Devices. Anything deleted from this album can't be recovered. To see how this affects storage, read Does deleting photos free up iPhone storage?

Still on your other devices: give sync time

With iCloud Photos on, a deletion on one device reaches the others, but not instantly. Apple says how long it takes for changes to appear across devices depends on your internet speed, and syncing can pause, for example in Low Data Mode or Low Power Mode, when the battery is below 20 percent, or when your iCloud storage is full.

  1. Connect the device to power and Wi-Fi and let it sync without interruption, overnight if your library is large.
  2. Check the library status: in Photos, tap Collections, then the profile button. The status appears below your name and photo count.
  3. On each device, go to Settings › your name › iCloud › Photos and check that Sync this [device] is on, with the same Apple Account everywhere. Apple says that if iCloud Photos is turned off on a device, deletions no longer sync between it and your other devices.

Apple also warns against the obvious fix: if photos aren't syncing, don't turn iCloud Photos off, because that restarts the syncing process.

Shared photos follow their own rules

  • iCloud Shared Photo Library. Anyone in it can delete, and a photo someone deletes disappears for everyone. It moves to Recently Deleted, and only the person who contributed it can delete it from there or recover it. Some photos only appear in certain library views, so switch between Personal Library, Shared Library and Both Libraries in the Photos app's library view options.
  • Shared albums. These have their own delete steps: open the shared album, tap the photo, tap the Delete button, then Delete From All Devices (in iOS 26 or earlier: the Trash button, then Delete Photo). The owner, or someone with Can Manage Album and Photos permission, can delete anyone's photos; everyone else can delete only what they added. Apple also says photos you saved from a shared album to your library stay there even if the album is deleted, so a saved copy has to be deleted on its own.

Hidden isn't deleted

Hiding moves photos to the Hidden album, so they disappear from your Library and other albums, but they're still in Photos. With iCloud Photos, a photo hidden on one device is hidden on the others too. If photos you thought were deleted turn up again, check whether they were hidden instead: Photos › Collections › Hidden (under Utilities) › View Album. If you can't see the Hidden album, it may be switched off in Settings › Apps › Photos › Show Hidden Album.

Photos synced from a computer

If photos got onto your iPhone by syncing from a computer, Apple says you can't delete them directly in the Photos app on the iPhone; a gray Trash button is the sign. Remove them from the computer side. With the Finder on a Mac:

  1. Connect the iPhone with a USB cable and unlock it.
  2. Select the iPhone in the Finder sidebar, then click the Photos tab.
  3. Choose Selected albums and deselect the albums you no longer want on the iPhone, or deselect Sync Photos and click Remove photos.
  4. Click Apply.

Apple says your device then removes the synced photos you turned off.

How SnapTidy handles deletion

In short

  • Check Recently Deleted first: it tells you whether the delete happened.
  • Sorting or marking in an app isn't deleting; finish the deletion there, or delete in Photos.
  • Other devices catch up when they sync: power, Wi-Fi, iCloud Photos on and the same Apple Account.
  • Shared Library, shared albums, hidden photos and computer-synced photos each follow their own rules.
